Exclusive Interview with Sydney Manson

SteeltownProWrestling.ca sits down with former SPW Hardcore Champion Sydney Manson in this exclusive interview!

Name: Sidney Manson
Height: 5'9.5"
Hometown: Eden Asylum

When did you break into the wrestling business?

I broke into the pro wrestling business on April 13, 1999.

Who inspired you to become a wrestler?  Who are your major influences as a wrestler?

No one really inspired me to be a pro wrestler. My major influence as a wrestler is "Diamond" Dallas Page. I could connect with DDP because we both have learning disabilities that we struggle with.

Who trained you?  Tell me about your first wrestling match?

I had 4 trainers. The 1st "Suicide" Stan Saxon. Stan Saxon was always encouraging me. Then I got Vance Nevada for a trainer. I spent the next 2 years refereeing, then the next 3 years conducting interview segments as Pastor Brad Jackson. In the summer of 2004 I wrestled my 1st match as Bob Zombie in a handicap match with Cory High (he wrestled as Minion). We took on Gabby "The American Psycho Clown (It was Vic Savage in a mask). We lost the match; I was tossed out of the ring while my partner was hit with a finisher. Meanwhile as I was lying outside I came in to a violent coughing fit. I got a virus a few months ago and I thought I had recovered. I was wrong. I started to vomit outside the ring. After I was done I went to the back and got undressed. When I was done Daisy Desire walked up to me and told me that Jerin Rose slipped in my puke. I decided to apologise to Jerin who had no idea what he slipped in until I was done apologising. From there I got Rob Stardom for my 3rd trainer, but I had a big problem with being timid in the ring. I fixed this problem when I joined a Backyard Wrestling Promotion that was trying to become an Independent Wrestling Promotion. They bought a legitimate ring from High Spots and got a trainer with a good rep named Gene Swan who became my 4th trainer, but it wasn't because of Gene Swan that I overcame my timidness. I overcame my timidness by working week after week with a stiff worker named Pastor Cam Conway.

What do you consider your wrestling style?  What type of offence do you use most?  What’s your finishing move?

I consider my wrestling style to be that of a brawler. I take some of my offensive moves from "Diamond" Dallas Page. I use DDP's crotch the guy on the ring post, his discus punch and tornado clothes line, and his shoulder tackle a guy while he's in a wristlock. My preferred finisher is Nick Bockwinkle's Singapore Sleeper

Which promoters/promotions have you worked for?  What other territories have you wrestled in?

I have refereed for RCW, CWF (once), & TRCW. I have managed for RCW & TRCW. I have done interview segments for RCW, TRCW, SPW (once), and SWE. I have wrestled for RCW, TRCW, WFC, SWE, OSW, and SPW.

Have you ever appeared on television/PPV or in a documentary/movie?

I have only wrestled in Manitoba and I have appeared on TV when Focus Manitoba did a feature on SPW.

What do you consider your best match so far?  Who have been your favourite opponents and your favourite tag team partners?

My best match was probably with Vinnie Valiant in the winter of 2008. My favourite opponent I'd say is Chip Fletcher. I don't really have a favourite tag partner.

What would you consider your 3 biggest accomplishments so far in your career?

A big accomplishment I achieved is when I wrestled for Dan "The Mark" Moore in the summer of 2010. I was booked in a match with Lord Damian Wolfstein. Lord Damian Wolfstein is considered to be one of the worst wrestlers in Manitoba. I wrestled with him once in the winter of 2004 for RCW. The match was terrible, but on Dan Moore's show I carried him through a good match. Steven Styles will back me up on this. My other big accomplishments would be all those times when the marks were giving no heat for the matches until I came out as Pastor Brad Jackson and stirred up enough heat to last through out the whole event.

If you could choose a dream opponent who would you choose from the 1980’s, 1990’s and the last decade?

Sting, in his Insane Icon gimmick.

What is your end goal as a wrestler?  What would you need to accomplish in order to consider your career a success?

Don't really have one. Maybe wrestle in Winkler.

What would you do differently if you could go back to your first day in the wrestling business and start over?

There isn't anything I would do differently. Everybody told me I was doing my best.

What is your take on the current state of the wrestling business?  What do you think needs to change/evolve in order for wrestling to hit the same peaks as the “Rock ‘n Wrestling Connection” or the “Monday Night Wars”?

I would have to say that WWE has gotten too commercial, too scripted, and too juvenile. I think WWE has to be more like TNA. Right now WWE needs less TV time and less PPVs. TNA needs maybe another 2 hours on prime time or a 3rd hour on Impact.

Where do you see yourself a year from now?  Five years from now?

In a year from now I hope to be working longer matches and using more of my creativity in my matches. In 5 years at the age of 39 I'll be looking at stepping out of the wrestling business. My friends and I in high school use to joke about how WCW should be called TWRH (The WWF Retirement Home). So many Main Eventers past 40 with nothing to prove. That will not be me; I will leave right before my 40th birthday.
