After a tumultuous weekend in September, Steeltown Pro Wrestling saw the emergence of several new champions. In fact all three major SPW championships changed hands over the course of three shows. SteeltownProWrestling.ca takes a look at the current crop of SPW champions.
SPW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
CHAMPION: Jethro Hawg
The road to glory began with the 2012 Red River Rumble followed by the 3rd annual Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament. Defeating Rob Stardom in the tournament finals also resulted in Jethro Hawg being crowned the new SPW Heavyweight Champion. After more than twenty years on the scene, Hawg felt that his time in SPW would be his swan song and looked forward with helping the next generation. The next generation is what pushed him outside his comfort zone and to another level resulting in one of the biggest moments of his career.
At only 16 years of age, Hawg wrestled regularly for the AWA at the Winnipeg Arena. When the WWF took over, Hawg wrestled for them too during a live event at the arena. He later spent much of his career travelling up and down the winter roads with Tony Condello on the now infamous “Northern Death Tours” with the likes of Lance Storm, Christian, Chris Jericho and Edge. Because of his unique personality, Jethro Hawg was featured on the CBC’s hit TV show “On the Road Again”, gaining national exposure.
Young at heart and in spirit, Jethro Hawg has proven that hard work pays off and in 2012 all that hard work has paid off in spades!
SPW PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
CHAMPION: MARIUS
MARIUS likens himself to a fine wine, getting better with each passing year. It’s hard to argue when he’s held the SPW Heavyweight Championship on two occasions, the only man to do so, with a reign as champion that spanned over 3 calendar years. Now a 2-time SPW Provincial Champion, MARIUS has travelled throughout Canada wrestling WWE Superstars and legends from Alberta to the Atlantic coast. Over the last four years MARIUS has been featured on numerous television broadcasts, internet pay-per-views and documentaries along with radio and newspaper interviews. SPW TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
CHAMPIONS: Mike Mission & Cory Diamond
“Misfit” Mike Mission got his start in SPW winning his first wrestling championship, the SPW Tag Team Championship, with then partner Chip Fletcher. Teaming with Cory Diamond, Mission has become a 2-time champion after dethroning SYKO & Son of Syko. The sky is the limit for Mission and after a successful reign as SPW Provincial Champion it stands to reason that he may be a future SPW Heavyweight Champion. His partner, Cory Diamond, has been on the scene for more than 10 years winning his share of singles and tag team championships before joining the Steeltown Pro Wrestling roster. Chasing the SPW Tag Team Championships over the last year, Diamond finally reached his goal of winning his first SPW Championship.
SPW HARDCORE CHAMPIONSHIP
CHAMPION: Chip Fletcher
After finding success in a tag team with Mike Mission, Chip Fletcher experienced a singles career revival following a bloody rivalry with SYKO. In one of SPW’s feel good stories of the year, Fletcher found great success as the inaugural SPW Hardcore Champion, a title he has now held on three occasions. Rechristened from Chip “the Kid” Fletcher to “Hardcore Kid” Chip Fletcher, he’s been in some intense battles with like of “Scarhead” Sydney Manson, Samuel and Kevy Chevy earning himself a reputation as one of the toughest, most hardcore men on the SPW roster. Whether he’s weileding a steel chair or a kendo stick, Chip Fletcher wears the SPW Hardcore Championship with great pride and honour. This is one guy you do not want to meet in a darkly lit, weapon filled alley.
