It was recently announced that the upcoming April 13th live event, the SPW 5th Anniversary Show would be the last SPW show ever. What does that mean?
SPW as we have come to know it over the last 5 years will cease to exist.
A lot has happened in 5 years…internet TV, video-on-demand; internet PPV, DVDs, broadcast TV, cable TV; tables matches, ladder matches, Steeltown Showdowns, blind fold matches, Red River Rumbles; international wrestling stars, superstars, wrestling legends, former World champions; live events across rural Manitoba, in Winnipeg, on first nation reserves, on a boat…
From Matt Fairlane as the first SPW Heavyweight Champion and La Sombra the first SPW Provincial Champion; from Jerin Rose and Alex Shaver as the first SPW Tag Team Champions and Chip Fletcher as the first SPW Hardcore Champion we have seen a lot of faces come and go. Who was the greatest of them all will be a debate never settled, what might have been will always be wondered.
I’m sad that it’s coming to an end. A final chapter is being written. I can confirm that as of the final bell on April 13th, SPW President Dale Barnett will be stepping down as president. I can also confirm that I will step down as SPW Director of Operations.
From a behind-the-scenes staff point of view, Dale Barnett and I have been the only constant in SPW just as MARIUS and Rob Stardom seemed to have been the constant in the ring. It’s funny how they served out their time in SPW as the perennial bad guys because when that final bell sounds they may also go down as the most respected guys to have stepped foot in an SPW ring. Over the years many men have been part of the team behind the curtain other than me and Dale and I’d like to thank them, specifically Ron McLean and Jethro Hawg.
For all those that stepped foot in a SPW ring, there are so many to mention, thank you so much. The memories you have made will remain with me forever, as well as on DVD which you’ll be able to purchase at other live events and online ;-)
April 13th is going to be a celebration…a party of a phenomenal 5 years or professional wrestling. I hope each and every one of you can come and celebrate with the men and women that made SPW special.
Once again, thank you so very much!
Sincerely,
John Henry
