SPW WRESTLERS COMPETED ON THE NORTHERN TOUR promoted by Tony Condello and made famous by such alumni as Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, Edge and Christian. Shadow Xtreme was a major fan favorite throughout the tour as was Jethro Hawg marking his 5^th tour along with SYKO who was competing on his first tour of Northern, Manitoba. The annual northern tours attract thousands of spectators on various northern communities throughout northern Manitoba and Ontario.

SELKIRK’S OWN JON CUTLER is set to make his Japanese wrestling debut in March for Tajiri’s SMASH promotion. Jon Cutler was a major part of the SPW roster when the company was first launched before appearing on a live episode of RAW and being signed by the WWE. The SPW head office is based in Selkirk with its biggest event held at the Selkirk Memorial Hall where Jon was initially trained by SPW’s own Matt Fairlane and Ike Idol.

SPW RETURNS TO ARBORG, MANITOBA at the Bifrost Community Centre on Saturday March 26^th. Already signed to appear are Arborg’s own Chip Fletcher, Mike Mission, Marius, Rob Stardom, Ike Idol, Matt Fairlane and more. More details to come.

JANUARY 28 EVENT RESULTS are available on the official SPW website. More than 150 screaming fans braved the elements for an action packed night of wrestling in Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, MB. Footage was taped for future DVD releases. SPW plans on returning to Notre-Dame next January.

SHADOW XTREME has embarked on Tony Condello’s world famous Northern Death Tour. This is the same tour that is written about in Edge and Chris Jericho’s autobiographies. In the past the tours have featured Edge, Christian, Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, Rhino and other international superstars in their earlier years. Last year SPW Heavyweight Champion Marius defended the championship on these famous treks through Northern Manitoba and Ontario.

Both newspapers are circulated throughout South Central Manitoba. The articles are part of the promotional campaign leading to SPW’s return to Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, Manitoba.

What to expect in 2011

A New Year is upon us. What does the future bring? Your guess is as good as any but here is what people from the SPW office and roster had to say:

Who will break out in 2011

John Henry: I touched on this in The Buzz and the more I think about it the more I’m leaning towards Tommy Lee Curtis. If he continues the way he has, there is nothing he can’t accomplish.

Matt Fairlane: If I had to pick two it would be Tommy Lee Curtis or Shadow Xtreme. TLC showed a lot of promise in the later half of 2010 while Shadow stepped up his game all year evolving past just being another trainee. There is something special about him that, if he can tap into it, he’ll be a big star in the company.

Shawn Coates: This may seem like a strange choice but I’m going to say Nacho Slurpee. He doesn’t have the best win/loss record but he’s proven to be a fan favorite despite win or losses. I think if he starts to take himself a little more serious, Nacho Slurpee could be the dark horse for break out star.

The state of the entire industry at the end of 2011

Ron McLean: With so much going on this is a tough one. If Bischof and Hogan leave TNA we could see some major changes in that company. If HDnet clears more markets and RoH keeps growing their internet PPV market, I think we’ll see some real growth. I think WWE will be much of the same but with a new crop of main event wrestlers that will include Sheamus, Wade Barrett, The Miz, John Morrison and Alberto Del Rio. Chris Jericho will also make his return sometime in the summer or right after SummerSlam and CM Punk will solidify himself as a future legend much as Edge did a few years ago.

Brady Blitz: I think WWE will be full of new faces. Dolph Ziggler and Daniel Bryan will both become free agents. TNA will hit the reset button again when Hogan and friends are fired. RoH will try to grow but will be hampered by roster depth. SPW will grow along with GoFightLive and debut on internet PPV. The UFC will continue to corner the PPV market with an international expansion into South America and Asia. Oh and Brock Lesnar will be built up for a rematch against Cane Valesquez and lose.

Robbie Robinson: I think WWE, TNA and RoH will be much of the same. WWE will continue its youth movement, TNA will struggle to settle on one direction and RoH will continue to grow its internet PPVs while creating new stars for the future. DragonGate USA will continue to grow as well with an expanded live event schedule and more terrestrial and internet PPVs as well as a DVD distribution deal or a deal with something like Netflix. Lucha Libre will continue to explode with a more American presence for AAA and CMLL and Lucha Libre USA will finish out Season 2 with its future in question. SPW will expand its presence on GoFightLive.tv and look at creating a new TV series that will air on cable.

Who will end 2011 as SPW Heavyweight Champion

Tom Hallick: He’s not very nice and he’s not very well liked but I’m a big fan of “Iron” Ike Idol. He’s my pick to end 2011 as SPW Heavyweight Champ!

Mike Mission: I like La Sombra’s chances because he’s always in the mix and really started to gain momentum throughout the summer. If not La Sombra I could see Chi Chi Cruz becoming a 2-time champion.

Rob Stardom: Marius finished 2009 as champion. He finished 2010 as champion. I’ll be damned if he doesn’t finish 2011 as champion too.

Who might receive the SPW Lifetime Achievement Award

Dale Barnett: I’d be very proud to give the award to Tony Condello for years of promoting throughout Central Canada.

Chi Chi Cruz: Dave Pinsky would be a good choice I think. He has a lot of history as a promoter, booker and wrestler..

Jethro Hawg: Having worked for Tony Condello for years, he would make a great choice. If not Tony then my next choice would be Walter Shefchyk.

Jerin Rose: I’d love to see Wayne Stanton get the award. No one gave more guys, more opportunities for such a long period of time as Wayne did. If not for Wayne and River City Wrestling a lot of us wouldn’t be here. Heck, SPW might not even be here!

What you’d like to see in 2011

SYKO: Marius continue his epic reign as SPW Heavyweight Champion and the end of Chip Fletcher’s career.

Shadow Xtreme: I’d like to see Necro Butcher and for SPW to debut in my hometown.

Marius: I’d like to see SPW debut on internet PPV and have more digital video content. It’s the next natural step for me as the champion, to prove why I’m better than Matt Fairlane.

Alex Shaver: I’d like to see the end of the Family of Darkness and for S ‘n R to get the Tag Team titles back!

Shawn Coates: A full fledged women’s division!

Let’s Start a Movement

Grassroots movements have always been a boon for independent pro wrestling companies looking to get the word out about their promotion and their talent roster. Never has there been a greater tool since word of mouth than social networking and social media services such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and blogs. A lot of people say they are tired of WWE and TNA. They are tired of the same patterns and the same wrestlers every week. Lucky for us wrestlers fans there are plenty of wrestling alternatives out there to satisfy any preferences!

Ring of Honor: They have plenty of free and downloadable footage on-line, have an amazing DVD library, produce internet PPV and are on HDnet every Monday night.

CMLL: From Arena Mexico in Mexcio City, CMLL is the oldest wrestling promotion on earth. You can watch them every week in Canada on The Fight Network.

Lucha Libre USA: This is a fairly new promotion that airs its episodes in a seasonal format on MTV2. They are currently filming footage for season 2.

DragonGate USA: DragonGate is a Japanese promotion that opened an American office last year. Shows are recorded in various cities (Chicago, New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York) and produced into terrestrial PPV available in Canada and the United-States.

Wrestlicious: If you like comedy and women’s wrestling this one has both. You can catch Wrestlicious on The Fight Network.

Showtime All-Star Wrestling: SAW is an independent promotion from Tennessee that has been producing a weekly TV series for several years now. You find their TV on the internet but if you live in the US you can also catch their TV show on American One.

World of Hurt: This a new series being produced by Lance Storm for The Cave network. It looks like it will be a reality TV type concept that follows Lance’s students in their struggles to become a wrestling superstar.

AWA Classics: You can catch classic AWA wrestling footage from the 1980’s on ESPN Classics!

Ultimate Classic Wrestling: Produced for The Fight Network, UCW offers a compilation of classic wrestling footage featuring the superstars of wrestling before they were superstars!

SPW SHOWDOWN: Last but not least there is SPW SHOWDWN on GoFightLive.tv. New episodes are released each and every week and they are all available on-demand worldwide.

There must be something in the water of the SPW head office because there seems to be a lot of rivalries amongst the roster, more than I can ever recall. Some rivalries are about championships, others about respect and some we simply can’t explain at the moment. Here is a quick look at the current rivalries going on in Steeltown Pro:

-Marius Vs Matt Fairlane over the SPW Heavyweight Title

-Ike Idol Vs Chi Chi Cruz over respect

-Rob Stardom Vs La Sombra over La Sombra’s mask and lucha heritage

-Bad to the Bone Vs S ‘n R over the SPW Tag Team Titles

-Syko Vs Chip Fletcher for reasons only known to SYKO

-Ann Brookstone Vs Mystik Sexton over being the #1 Female in SPW

-Bobby Jay Vs Bushwhacker Luke over who is the real veteran and legend in SPW

-Spanky Vs Tommy Lee Curtis over who is the better wrestler after the demise of their short lived tag team

RoH Show Review by John Henry

I attended the Ring of Honor show in Mississauga, Ontario over the weekend along with Camikazee, Danny Duggan and SPW Heavyweight Champion Marius. All three men were involved in the show and had a chance to meet with RoH officials. I was a guest backstage and watch the entire show from the gorilla position. There was about 1,000 people in attendance and they truly made the atmosphere with their undeniable passion for wrestling.

Marius, Camikazee and Danny Duggan participated in a RoH Try-out Camp this summer in Winnipeg which resulted in this trip. Camikazee won the try-out camp and an opportunity to wrestle for Ring of Honor. He recently completed a week long try out for the WWE in Florida and is on a major role. The same can be said for Danny Duggan who received a WWE try-out in Calgary and Edmonton last week. Duggan also competed for Tajiri’s SMASH promotion in Japan. He’ll be back in Japan for SMASH at the end of the month, I believe.

The show started with Duggan and Camikazee Vs Ashley Sixx and Rip Impact. It was a great match that really showed off Duggan and Camikazee’s talent. RoH Preseident Cary Silken and the RoH match makers were very impressed with the match. Duggan got the “W” with a top rope double knee stomp.

Eddie Edwards announced that he separated his shoulder the night before.

Michael Elgin teamed with Zack Gowan to take on Grizzly Redwood and Bobby Dempsey. Elgin and Gowen had a falling out at the end of the match. Dempsey and Redwood picked up the win.

Marc Briscoe defeated Andy Ridge in a back and forth match.

The All-Night Express defeated Colt Cabana and El Generico after outside interference by Kevin Steen. Steen had to be forced to the back by Camikazee, Danny Duggan and several other wrestlers.

Adam Cole and Kyle O’Reilly defeated the Bravado Brothers. Both teams are young and seem to have a bright future with tons of talents at their disposal. Very fast paced and hard hitting!

Homicide defeated Jay Briscoe. Homicide made sure to include a few Eddie Guerrero tributes as it was the anniversary of his passing.

The Kings of Wrestling defeated Kevin Steen and Steve Corino to retain the RoH World Tag Team Titles. Outside interference from El Generico caused a major distraction and started a brawl between Steen and Generico that saw Marius, Camikazee, Danny Duggan and several others try to separate them.

In the main event Roderick Strong retained the RoH World Title in a great match against Christopher Daniels. Christopher Daniels is just amazing in that ring and I can’t believe TNA let him go. TNA’s MAJOR loss in RoH’s MAJOR gain but it surprises me that Daniels is not in the WWE at this point in his career.

This was my first RoH event and it was a grand experience. Tatanka was in attendance as was Greg Oliver, Jade Chung, Dave Lagana and several Ontario independent wrestlers.

SPW has been a member of the Allied Independent Wrestling Federations for quite a while now but not much is known about this agreement or about the AIWF. First things first…what is the AIWF?

Like the NWA 30 years ago the AIWF is an umbrella promotion that has affiliates or members around the world. Each member promotion is run independently of the other but they are all members of the AIWF and represent a specific territory or region of their respective countries. As a whole AIWF members recognize the AIWF World Title as the main prize. In all the AIWF have more than 20 members across the United-States and the United Kingdom with SPW being its only Canadian member.

As a promotion the AIWF has official website with news on its members, they have a message boards for fans around the world to get together and they recently launched their very own TV series that features matches from all the AIWF members called AIWF WorldWide TV. They also have an official AIWF on-line store that sells AIWF and AIWF member merchandise.

Looking at the AIWF website you can see that SPW is one of its biggest new contributors with regular editions of the SPW News & Notes right on the main page and in their archived news links. What’s disappointing in that the AIWF has never had a strong presence in SPW and they have yet to send their “World Champion” to defend his title in Canada and in SPW. If any promotion should have a “World Title” defence, it’s Steeltown Pro.

As a promotion SPW is very active with monthly TV tapings and a weekly TV series. The website is always updated and they are active users of social media. In fact in almost all instances, SPW has more Facebook, YouTube and Twitter users following SPW than AIWF. Between SPW’s level of activity and their presence in AIWF news updates you’d think they would want their “World Champion” to make an appearance and help raise the awareness of the AIWF World Title. Unfortunately that has not happened yet.

I can think of several SPW wrestlers that would make a good AIWF World Champion such as Chi Chi Cruz, Matt Fairlane, Ike Idol, Rob Stardom or Marius. Like the SPW Heavyweight Title the AIWF World Title could be defended in different provinces and even south of the border in Minnesota, North Dakota and beyond. After all, how could you have a “world wrestling title” that has never been defended in Canada, a country known for its high level of grapplers and rich pro wrestling history? And what better time to have a SPW based AIWF World Champion than now, where it can be featured weekly on SPW SHOWDOWN on GoFightLive.tv as well as AIWF WorldWide TV?

I say its time that the AIWF World Champion makes a visit to the great white north and defends his championship in Steeltown Pro Wrestling!

For only the cost of your time the internet allows us to reach millions of people around the globe.

-The official SPW website is updated every week, often several times a week with news updates and special features. Visit SteeltownProWrestling.ca

-The Facebook Group has over 4500 members and like the website is regularly updated with links to articles on the website, the blog, YouTube videos and upcoming event information. Join the SPW Facebook Group

-With more than 500 followers, SPW’s Twitter account is another source of timely information with links to the website, SPW SHOWDOWN, videos and more. Just a look at their profile page shows that SPW is a regular “tweeter”. Follow SPW on Twitter

-Nearly 100 videos are available on the SPW YouTube channel with episodes of SPW iTV, SPW BlogTV, Access_Wrestling, sponsor commercials and links to wrestler channels like Marius and Ike Idol. More than 100 subscribers and 500 friends follow SPW on YouTube! Watch SPW on YouTube

-Recently SPW started using their MySpace page again. While not as popular as it once was, MySpace is still used by many promotions and wrestlers throughout the United States. SPW has over 800 MySpace friends that have access to regular SPW News & Notes, links to SPW SHOWDOWN and other information. SPW on MySpace

-During the summer SPW launched an official blog through Google’s Blogger service. Several people have contributed to the blog including SPW President Dale Barnett, John Henry, Ron McLean, Jethro Hawg and lately, ME! There are videos from YouTube, the weekly SPW News & Notes, and exclusive articles and of course blogs from SPW staff members! Read the SPW Blog

SPW covers all the major sites: Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Blogger and MySpace which are all regularly updated and are all linked back to THE main source of SPW information, SteeltownProWrestling.ca! SPW SHOWDOWN: Four Episodes and Counting by SPWsuperfan01

The first month of SPW SHOWDOWN is now in the record books! SPW has already produced four episodes of SPW SHOWDOWN and we’re starting to see some rivalries build up as we head into November for SPW SHOWDOWN: Episodes 5 to 8.

What have we seen so far?

-SPW Heavyweight Champion Marius has gone on a winning streak, as has #1 Contender Matt Fairlane. It looks like a match between these two will happen sooner than later as they rack up wins and exchange heated words.

-WWE Legend Bushwhacker Luke made his debut in Episode 1, wrestled on Episode 2 and challenged SPW Provincial Champion SYKO on Episode 4. These two battle over the SPW Provincial Title on Episode 5! I can’t wait!

-Moses Luke made his debut on Episode 3 with his first match against Jerin Rose on Episode 4. He’s a big German guy so I’m looking forward to see what he’s capable of in the ring.

-Chip Fletcher made his debut on Episode 1, teamed with Bushwhacker Luke on Episode 2 and was attacked from behind by SYKO on Episode 4. But why? Hopefully we’ll find out more on future episodes!

-Ike Idol has been on a winning streak. He defeated Gibby Guerrero to be named #1 Contender to the SPW Provincial Title but hasn’t gotten a title match yet. I bet he challenges the winner of the SYKO/Bushwhacker Luke match that will happen on Episode 5.

-The wild women of SPW, Ann Brookstone and Mystik Sexton, debuted on Episode 3 wrestling each other. Brookstone challenged Mystik to a re-match during Episode 4 and that match got signed to take place on SPW SHOWDOWN: Episode 5

-Paul Brewski was attacked by Rob Stardom during his match against SYKO on SPW SHWODOWN: Episode 3. Brewski and Chi Chi Cruz challenged Stardom and SYKO to a tag match on Episode 4. After being pinned by Brewski in the tag team match, Stardom challenged Brewksi to a singles match on SPW SHOWDOWN: Episode 5.

The Build to Episode 5 and Beyond

I like how each episode has been able to have small elements to build to future matches. Episode 5 will definitely have the most back story to it with the Brookstone Vs Mystik re-match, the first Stardom Vs Brewski singles match and the Provincial Title match between SYKO and Luke. We’ll hear from Marius and Matt Fairlane who are feuding with each other and from Chip Fletcher has some words for SYKO so it looks like they’ll be building up a rivalry over the next few weeks. Plus you have Ike Idol waiting in the wings for his Provincial Title match.

I bet we’ll be seeing Fairlane Vs Marius for the Heavyweight Title really soon, maybe as soon as Episode 6 or 7. I hope Fairlane wins it; he’s the best in SPW.

Like I said before, I expect Ike Idol to get his SPW Provincial Title shot really soon, probably against whoever wins the SYKO/Luke match.

No way will it be over between Brookstone and Mystik after Episode 5. These two women were great on Episode 3 and I want to see more from them! Hopefully we see even more women in the near future. I’m positive we’ll see at least 2-3 more matches from them before this one is over.

Chip Fletcher got attacked by SYKO for no reason at all, he wasn’t even provoked. That’s good though because it made me wonder “why did Syko attack Fletcher” which makes me want to tune in for Episode 5 to see what Fletcher has to say. Does he even know why or do we have to wait until Episode 6 to find out what SYKO has to say about the whole thing.

It’s only been four episodes but we’ve already got a lot of future matches set-up for the next batch of episodes not mention some rivalries are about to heat up!

New Faces

Another thing I like is how SPW SHOWDOWN has had some new faces debut in SPW. Andrew Hawk and Paul Brewski are great in the ring; Moses Luke has a lot of potential as a big man and of course the introduction of women wrestlers to SPW. I hope we get to see more of Tommy Lee Curtis and guys like “Rebel” Bobby Collins haven’t debuted yet but I’m sure he will soon.

I know that PPV is hard to get. Even TNA has trouble with PPV sales. But I’m hoping that one day SPW can do some kind of “supershow” that resembles a PPV. I think it’s a good idea because then you build all your storylines towards this one big show. Maybe it can be on DVD or maybe it can be a special episode of SPW SHOWDOWN that is 1 hour or more instead of the regular 30 minutes to make it special. I think building to a bigger show would give SPW SHOWDOWN a “big league” feel to the series.

Conclusion

SPW SHOWDOWN is just starting to build itself up and I think it will only get better as guys develop a history together and matches have more and more of a story behind them. I can’t wait to see Episode 5 because the first 4 episodes really helped to set up a lot of what will happen.

For people looking to make a name for themselves in Steeltown Pro Wrestling there are a lot of options from championships titles to awards.

In the past there was the CEW Inter-Cities and TRCW Heavyweight Titles along with the SPW Heavyweight, SPW Provincial and SPW Tag Team Titles. SPW now recognizes only their top three titles so for a wrestler looking to make a statement they want to win one of those.

What if you can’t seem to get a title shot? What if you want to do something that will force SPW officials to give you a title shot? SPW has a few options!

One way is by fan voting on SteeltownProWrestling.ca. Each year SPW hosts a poll with the question being “Who is SPW Wrestler of the Year”. Two people have won this award, Bobby Jay and SYKO and both men were given championship matches. We’re close to the end of the year and my vote for 2010 is Ike Idol or Chi Chi Cruz.

Another way is the annual Red River Rumble where the winner is awarded a shot the SPW Heavyweight Title. Matt Fairlane won the Red River Rumble in 2008 and in 2010 while Rob Stardom won the 2009 edition. The Red River Rumble has become one of SPW’s biggest events of the year along with the Anniversary Show so there is not better place to step-up.

The third is the recently created Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament where the winner is awarded a giant trophy. The first winner of the trophy was Chi Chi Cruz, a good friend of Kerry Brown’s. This is SPW’s newest honour and could lead to a title match for Chi Chi Cruz either against Marius for the Heavyweight Title or even his nemesis Ike Idol for the Provincial Title.

For retired and semi-retired wrestlers there is the SPW Lifetime Achievement Award which has been awarded to Sgt. Tom Steele (2008), Dave Petro (2009), Ernie Rheault (March 2010) and Puppy Dog Peloquin (September 2010). A lot of people deserve this award like Jethro Hawg or Tony Condello just to name two but I think one or two winners a year is enough.

If you want a make a name for yourself and write your name in pro wrestling history books, SPW gives wrestlers a lot of options: 3 championships, a fan voting award, a rumble, a tournament and a lifetime achievement award. I wonder if anyone well ever be able to score a “grand slam” and win them all! If anyone can do it, it’s one of my favourite wrestlers: MATT FAIRLANE!

Should SPW rename the Heavyweight Title?

The world of wrestling is littered with a variety of championships: World, TV, Tag Team, Women’s, Cruiserweight, X-Division…the list goes on! Several local, regional and territorial wrestling groups have named their Heavyweight Title as a “World title” despite little credibility as a true “World” title. After all, should a World title not be defended on a global level? Shouldn’t the title holder be recognized beyond their home promotion or their local circuit and should it not cross national borders to be a true “world title”?

SPW’s top prize is the SPW Heavyweight Title. The championship has been held by three men in the last 2.5 years. Over the course of those 2.5 years the title has been defended beyond SPW’s main regional base in other provinces, countries and for a variety of promoters. In an effort to establish the credibility of the championship, SPW officials worked hard to make the SPW Heavyweight Champion a travelling champion.

So the question I ask is: Should the SPW Heavyweight Title be re-named the SPW North American Heavyweight Title. Why? I’m glad you asked…

As the inaugural champion Matt Fairlane set out to establish the newly created championship defending the title across Manitoba. Over the course of his 370+ days as champion Fairlane would defend the title against WWE prospect Zack Mercury, international star Mentallo, “Really Crazy” Rob Stardom, Canadian legend “Beautiful” Bobby Jay and more in every corner of the province. In early October 2009 he would talk the championship across the border to Chanhassen, Minnesota and defend the title against Pete Huge in Minnesota Independent Wrestling.

A title defence inn the United-States marked the first time the championship was defended outside of Manitoba, let alone be the first time to be defended in another country! Matt Fairlane had set out what he said he would do, he established the Steeltown Pro Wrestling Heavyweight Title. During this time SPW had created working agreements with promotions in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Oregon giving the title recognition throughout the United-States.

Becoming the second SPW Champion most people wondered how Marius could ever follow in the shoes of Matt Fairlane as champion. Marius would not be denied, however. Immediately, Marius began defending the title throughout Manitoba. A week after winning the championship he defended it in Regina, Saskatchewan marking the first time the title was defended in another province. He followed that up with title defence in Gibbons, Alberta and several months later in Northern Manitoba and Northern Ontario. Marius recently defended the championship for the WWA, the sister promotion of South Koreas WWA, whose main star is the legendary Leatherface.

The only other man to be SPW Heavyweight Champion is a legend in his own right, Chi Chi Cruz. Cruz has travelled the world working for the USWA and the WWF, touring South Africa and Germany, and being the main event on a show in Japan. His status in the wrestling industry lends heavy credibility to the championship.

SPW would eventually partner up with the AIWF, an umbrella promotion with more than 20 affiliates through the US and the world. This strategic alliance brought the SPW Heavyweight Title even more recognition throughout the southern United States where the AIWF has a base of operations.

Along with title defences in a variety of territories and recognizition from promotions across the continent, the SPW Heavyweight Title has been regularly featured to a global audience through episodes of SPW iTV that aired on YouTube and Steeltownprowrestling.ca. It now reaches an even bigger audience with weekly episodes of SPW SHOWDOWN on GoFightLive.tv.

So why do I think the SPW Heavyweight Title could be renamed the SPW North American Heavyweight Title? Let’s recap:

-It’s been defended in the United-States
-It’s been defended throughout central and western Canada
-It’s been defended against wrestling legends, WWE prospects and international superstars
-It’s been recognized by promotions throughout the Pacific Northwest, Midwest and Southern United-States

SPW TV Update

We’ve just received word that by the end of the week there will be a formal announcement regarding the details of Steeltown Pro Wrestling’s new TV series.

SPW has held 3 TV tapings since August and has been working on the new series since June.

The new SPW TV series will be a weekly 30 minute program.

It’s been a lot of hard work but seeing those first two episodes of the new SPW TV series proved to me that we’re headed a new direction and I like where the direction is taking us. We screened episode 1 and 2 for the entire roster the afternoon of September 18th show giving the crew a glimpse of what we’re trying to accomplish and where things are headed. The reaction was quite positive.

Episodes 3, 4 and 5 are already in production and before long we’ll be making some official announcements regarding where and when you’ll be able to watch the SPW TV series, including its official name! We settled on a name a few weeks ago and have since created a logo to go along with it. I’m looking forward to clicking the send button on the official press release and get this project officially underway.

I found it easy to be tight lipped about the whole thing until the last TV taping. Everything is coming closer to being reality, REAL close. I’m getting anxious to hit the ground running with this thing. Like all things in life we’re already looking at ways to improve what we’re doing from the way things are recorded and edited right down to the final presentation. Nothing we’re done in SPW has happened over night, nor has it been perfect from the start but we know and the fans know, we’re always pushing in that direction.

We build a foundation, a solid base, and then build it up from there. It’s been this way since show #1 and it will probably always be so. I know that the SPW staff all share the same sentiment: we’d rather work at a steady pace, always growing and improving over time, rather than attempt to be perfect right from the start, spend lots of capital to get there and close our doors within weeks of a failed attempt. We’ve seen this scenario play out so many times over the years. There was the early 90’s version of the UWF from Herb Abrahams, the mid-90’s version of the AWF, Ring Warriors, MECW, MLW, XPW, XWF, AWE, WSX and even the beloved ECW and media giant owned WCW…they’ve all come and gone and I’m not even naming them all!

It started with one live event which turned in to 1 DVD release. Before long we had 11 live events under our belt with 11 DVD releases. We created two weekly internet TV shows which ran for more than 90 episodes! One step at a time over the course of the last 29 months and we’ve arrived here. More than 45 DVD release, 55 live events, 6200 hours of video content released and appearances by wrestlers from around the world. Not to shabby.

I remember after our first show naysayers were already calling the death knell saying we’d dry up and close our doors before the summer was out. I can’t predict the future but I can reflect on the past. We proved them wrong then, we still do today and I’ll be damned if we don’t keep doing it moving forward.

This is a great time for Steeltown Pro Wrestling and I’m proud like a father to be leading the charge.

SPW Returns to Winnipeg!

A Word From El Presidente

John Henry suggested I write something for the blog…since when do employees tell the President what to do? All kidding aside, I have wanted to write something for awhile so here it is!

The work that John Henry, Jethro Hawg and Ron McLean do in the office is indispensable. They’re the guys that keep this motor running from day to day and without them I’d be lost and running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Kudos to them and I hope they stay with the team for years to come.

I have to say our double shot in August where we filmed over 30 matches for a new SPW broadcast series was quite the undertaking. We managed to get a lot of the footage we needed from in-ring action to vignette to backstage interviews. We need more, though, and we’ll be getting it on September 18th. I’m really looking forward to the day where we can announce the airing of episode 1.

Bushwhacker Luke was great to work with and may have become my favorite wrestler that we have brought in. He was a total pro, worked his butt off and helped us in any way he could especially when it came to dishing out invaluable advice to our young talent. He was a great addition to the roster and we hope to have him back in the future.

It amazes me how great some of these guys can be to work with. I still keep in contact with Raven and Cody Deaner on a regular basis. Recently I was called at random by Leatherface. This was the first time we ever talked and I look forward to meeting him in person, whenever that may be.

Some of the people that impressed on August 20th and 21st were Andrew Hawk, Paul Brewski, Ann Brooktsone, Tommy Lee Curtis and Mystik Sexton as well as the aforementioned Bushwhacker Luke. These guys really added a different flavor to our line-ups that weekend and they all stepped up to the plate. These people will always be welcome additions to our regular roster, which I hope to make TLC a part of over the next few months.

I really enjoy my summer and I’m looking forward to SPW fall schedule as we continue to work so many projects from DVD releases, live events across Manitoba and the new SPW TV broadcast.

Marius: Filling Fairlane's Shoes

He’s the first 2-time SPW Heavyweight Champion.

He’s defended the title 22 times and counting.

He’s defended the title in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario.

He’s reigned as champion for 307 combined days.

These are impressive statistics when you consider that Marius was considered Rob Stardom’s lackey, unable to find success without the help of his father. After winning the SPW Heavyweight Title in a dubious manner (assistance from Rob Stardom, Syko, a steel chair and the title belt) Marius has gone out of his way to prove his merit as champion.

Matt Fairlane set the tone for all future champions. He became the champion by winning a one night 8-man tournament. He held the title for 378 uninterrupted days with a total of 21 title defences. Fairlane was the first man to defend the title outside of Manitoba, and Canada for that matter, when he successfully defended the title in Chanhassen, Minnesota for Minnesota Independent Wrestling. His opponents included Zack Mercury, JJ Sanchez, Canadian wrestling icon Bobby Jay, AJ Sanchez, TJ Bratt, Rob Stardom and international wrestling star Mentallo.

With big shoes to fill Marius wasted no time defending the title a little over a month later in Regina, Saskatchewan against AJ Sanchez. This was his first of many out of province title defences. The list of challengers that Marius has fended off is no cake walk either. Opponents that he’s turned away include AJ Sanchez, Matt Fairlane, Canadian wrestling legend Chi Chi Cruz, Zack Mercury, La Sombra, Jay Lanza, Shadow Xtreme, Rick Mattthews and international wrestling star Mentallo.

He may have lost the title to Chi Chi Cruz but Marius wasted no time challenging the veteran to a re-match. With the help of Jade Phoenix and Rob Stardom, Marius was able to regain the SPW Heavyweight Title seven days after losing it. With that he was officially named the first ever 2-time SPW Heavyweight Champion.

From the onset Marius had specific goals as champion: establish a longer title reign than Matt Fairlane, defend the title more times against better opponents and do so in more towns, provinces and states than any other person in the territory. While he hasn’t accomplished all of his goals, everyday he reigns as champion allows him to close that gap between him and his rival Matt Fairlane.

Matt Fairlane set the bar and the tone for all champion to come. Marius recognized the level Fairlane set and stepped up his game and raised the bar in his own right. Without a shadow of a doubt these two men have built the foundation on which SPW and its top prize are built. Future champions will surely be measured against Matt Fairlane and Marius’ reigns as SPW Heavyweight Champion.

Whatever Happened To…

Whatever happened to “Cocky” Chris Dion?

Signed on as one of the first members of the SPW roster along with Rob Stardom, Marius, Mikey Miracle and Bobby Jay big things were expected from the young Chris Dion.

Regularly featured competing on SPW iTV Chris Dion showed that he had championship potential. In fact he remains undefeated on SPW iTV and was considered a favourite to winning the SPW Provincial Title when it was first introduced. On a few occasions Dion hosted SPW BlogTV and proved to be a great interviewer.

So what happened to Chris Dion? Well his comfort and confidence behind the microphone opened up a whole new world for Dion who took up a second career as a radio broadcaster. As his broadcasting schedule grew, his wrestling schedule was reduced.

By the end of 2008 Chris Dion had been hired full time working for a major broadcasting corporation in the Central Canadian market.

Hey all...I know...I know, it's been a while but I’ve been busy on the ol' farm the last while and well...o.k., that's just an excuse...but the upside is I have a whack of news...so hang onto your straw hat!!

SPW had show #50 and 51 this last while, show #50 was in one of my favorite places, Manitou Manitoba. We had a heck of a show, with guys like Vance Nevada coming in and SPW Heavyweight Champ Marius, the Provincial Champ SYKO with his first defense of that title, La Sombra, Ike Idol...and even I jumped in...so it was a great show to say the least...I want to personally thank the great fans who came to this show and also Ellis Pharmacy for sponsoring the show!! Thanks very much!! Hopefully next time we can have some more local businesses involved...that always makes the events just that much better!!

Show #51 was in Ste. Agathe and also had one heck of a line up! You can see all the results right here on the SPW website!

Now the big news I have this time around is the appearance of one fellow that I enjoyed watching for years...he is none other than Bushwhacker Luke!! He is appearing at the show in Arborg and at the big outdoor show in Selkirk! Not only was he one of my fav's but with the experience and his ability to entertain the crowd it will be awesome!!

As for more dates in my beloved Pembina Valley area...we are working on some possibilities right now for fall and winter...towns we have been to before and maybe a new one or two...who knows? We are always looking to the fans as well, so if anyone is in a town that would like to see SPW bring the show there...drop us a line and we'll put it on the table!!

Matt Fairlane has been long considered the face of SPW while John Cena is regarded in the same light over in the WWE. Both men have had memorable Heavyweight Title reigns and have taken on every challenge in their life with confidence and determination.

Two families entrenched in the dark arts and the occult do battle when the father and son team of the Family of Darkness take on the former world champion Brothers of Destruction. Brimstone and hellfire is sure to reign in this dream match.

It’s the Scotland born Ike Idol Vs the Irish born Sheamus. For added flavor I’d like to Roddy Piper accompany Ike Idol to the ring as a manager. In the opposite corner I’d give Sheamus the rugged Fit Finlay! This match would make for a hard hitting encounter with plenty of brawling I’m sure.

Chi Chi Cruz Vs Chris Jericho

If you lived on the Canadian prairies in the early-90’s you may have already witnessed this match-up. With more than 20 years of experience each since their last encounter this match is sure to be a Canadian wrestling clinic! Both men influenced by Stampede Wrestling and the WWF, this match would make it all come full circle since their time on Tony Condello’s Northern Tours.

Straight Edge Warfare
Shadow Xtreme Vs CM Punk

CM Punk is straight edge and so is Shadow Xtreme. I think these two would have a really good match with a rapid pace and plenty of innovative offence. Who knows, maybe after the match Punk extends a hand in respect and Shadow joins the Straight Edge Society!

Rose Cutter Vs RKO
Jerin Rose Vs Randy Orton

Jerin Rose uses a variation of the Ace Crusher and so does Randy Orton. Who ever hits it first is sure to take home the win but will it be?

Battle of Britain
James Beaver Vs William Regal

James Beaver immigrated from Great Britain to pursue his wrestling career. He hopes to hone craft in an attempt to sign a contract with RoH or DragonGate USA. William Regal did the same things decades ago which led to WCW and WWE contracts. I think Regal could take Beaver under his wing and mold him into a top flight wrestler reminiscent of Billy Robinson and Johnny Saint.

Fifty Shows and Counting

Wow, fifty shows have come and gone. Where do we go from here? SPW President Dale Barnett has touched on this subject awhile back with his thoughts but I thought I’d share mine on the official SPW blog.

From the onset of our first show critics were already signalling the end and you know what? They are still saying it! With 50 live events, 40+ DVD releases, 95+ episodes of SPW iTV and more than 100 hours of wrestling in our video library I think we’ve been able to prove the critics wrong. We’ve even had appearances from independent stand outs, former world champions and WWE legends. Heck our Heavyweight Title has been defended in 4 provinces and in the United States.

Now with 50 shows behind us and a foundation solidly built, where do we go from here? There are so many directions we could take and choosing the right path is never an easy task. It’s imperative to choose the direction that will most benefit the promotion and its growth. What would I like to see SPW do over the next 50 live events?

1. For several months we’ve been tinkering with the idea of a new broadcast property. In a perfect world it would be 30+ minutes long and available both online and on terrestrial television in our territory. So far we’ve tested out two pilot TV tapings with more to come as we move forward with this ambitious project. Getting this project up and running is definitely at the top of my list.

2. I would love to take the SPW video library digital and offer it online in a video-on-demand format. It’s where the world is headed, movies and TV shows included. With that in mind I’d also like to see SPW iTV available for download on iTunes. Heck even a live stream internet PPV isn’t even a far fetched idea anymore. The rapid evolution of technology makes it technically and fiscally plausible. The world in online and so to should be SPW.

3. Aesthetically I’d love to enhance the live event experience; a new entrance way with lights, lasers and a fog machine; a video screen and projector featuring graphics, in-ring action, entrance videos, music videos and even backstage vignettes.

4. And what about merchandise; I’d love to expand our line! One day I’d love to see the SPW ProShop with wrestler t-shirts, wall posters, bumper stickers, action figures and even more trading card sets such as special sets with different themes and schemes. Maybe even, one day, an SPW themes video game!

5. Our territory has been primarily the Interlake and south central Manitoba. There are untapped markets across eastern and western Canada not to mention Northern Manitoba that expands our territory in the province itself. Not to mention the many border towns along the Manitoba/Ontario, Manitoba/Saskatchewan, Manitoba/North Dakota and Manitoba/Minnesota borders that could extend the territory into 3 provinces and 2 American states. Wishful thinking? Yes and no!

Some of these ideas are much easier to implement than others, some are already in motion but each can be an important part of SPW’s growth. Nothing happens over night but as we expand all these ideas get discusses, thrown around, critiqued and researched. We’ve been around two years and you never know where we can be five years from now. It’s a grand vision but an attainable vision none the less. All it takes is what we’ve been doing for the last two years: planning, organizing, hours upon hours in the office and on the road and of course A LOT of blood, sweat and tears!

If you’re going to think, might as well think big! Now bring on the next 50 shows!

SPW in the Interlake

The Interlake region of Manitoba is one filled with lakes, rivers, cabins, camping and culture; a true Manitoba gem. SPW was born in the Interlake region with its main office located in Selkirk, MB. Over the last two years SPW has made stops in several Interlake communities with regularly scheduled stops in Arborg and Gimli.

In 2008 SPW promoted several events in Selkirk as well as debuted on Stonewall in October of that year. Stonewall’s own PJ Tyler made her hometown wrestling debut to a near sold-out crowd. Tyler is currently a regular competitor on Ontario wrestling circuit.

SPW next ventured in Arborg, Manitoba where they met Chip “the Kid” Fletcher which has resulted in regular stops in the town. With increased attendance and regular stops ome argue that Arborg has become SPW’s second biggest market, right behind Selkirk! SPW returns to Arborg on Friday May 28 for another night of action-packed wrestling action.

Gimli, Manitoba is known for its Icelandic roots and heritage, proud of their ties to ancient Viking societies. In the last decade it has also became a great wrestling town thanks to local star, Gibby Guerrero and SPW referee Brady Blitz. SPW has promoted 3 events in Selkirk since it first debuted there in February 2009 and will be making its return on Saturday June 5th. The last event, held on April 3rd had only two rows of seating left and was nearly sold-out as standing room only.

Stony Mountain was included on the SPW schedule in September 2009. Just a stones throw away from Stony Mountain Penitentiary, SPW wowed fans with another great night of wrestling in the Interlake region.

In March 2010 SPW debuted in Beausejour, Manitoba which finds itself just on the outskirts of the Interlake region. That event saw the debut of former TNA Star Cody Deaner. The event also feature local referee Lenny Travis and Zack Mercury who also lives in the area. SPW is looking to return to Beausejour in the near future.

SPW’s history in the Interlake region is still being written but one thing is for sure, for SPW the Interlake region is home. With an expanding schedule in the area SPW is always excited to return to towns like Arborg and Gimli and of course it’s biggest events at the Selkirk Memorial Hall!

Nuts and Bolts from the Weekend

I went to the TOOL concert in Winnipeg with John Henry on Sunday. While the opening act left much to be desired, TOOL did not disappoint. This was definitely the type of concert that you sit back and soak in with the amazing riffs, powerful drums, cryptic lyrics and stunning visuals.

While we were there we spotted Zack Mercury in the crowd. In fact after we spotted him the people behind also recognized him and asked us if he was still wrestling. John Henry’s answer? He wrestles for Steeltown Pro Wrestling based out of Selkirk. Always the salesman!

Everyone in the SPW office enjoyed a long weekend with Canada Day on Thursday and beautiful weather throughout the weekend. While I stayed in Selkirk enjoying some fishing, John Henry hit up the beach in Killarney while Ron McLean spent the weekend at Grand Beach. I heard Jethro Hawg was spotted feeding animals near Minnewasta Beach in Morden.

I’m looking forward to show #50 this weekend. Steeltownprowrestling.ca will be releasing a full line-up sometime this week. We also announced the schedule for the remainder of the summer. I’m looking forward to the upcoming TV project that we’ve been working on for a little while now, can’t wait until that comes to fruition. I’m also looking forward to meeting Bushwhacker Luke in person as we’ve been doing all our business over the phone and through e-mail. Seems like a standup guy.

Double Shot Weekend w/ Bushwhacker Luke

Steeltown Pro Wrestling will be hosting another double shot weekend on August 20th in Arborg and August 21st in Selkirk. As the tradition goes with SPW double shots we will be having a special guest and his name is Bushwhacker Luke, former WWF Superstar and Wrestling Legend!

The man from New Zealand first made his name in North America as part of the Sheepherders tag team which evolved into the Bushwhackers in the WWF. He spent much of the later part of his career wrestling in Puerto Rico and making appearances around the world on independent wrestling shows as well as the convention circuit such Comicon!

His opponents will be named at a later date.

The pair of shows will also serve as a TV Taping for a brand new SPW broadcast. SPW recently held a dry run for a TV taping on June 26th at Hurts So Good 2010. The show on August 21st in Selkirk, the third annual Red River Rumble, is being brought to you by the City of Selkirk, FREE of charge, outdoors at the Selkirk River Front (rain location at the Selkirk Memorial Hall).

A Word From the President

I decided it was time to write a blog and discuss some of things going on in Steeltown Pro Wrestling. We’ve now been in operation (promoting shows) since April 2008 and during that time I’ve done a lot of reflecting. I tend to look at where we’ve been, what we’ve accomplished and most important where we’re headed. Sometimes I have to give my head a shake because it’s hard to believe we’ve been able to do all we’ve done and it only feels like the beginning.

When we had our first meeting (we being myself and John Henry as well as some investors) in November 2007 it was a lot of “what ifs”. John and I looked at the work we had a head of us, the roles we would play and wondered “how the heck can we pull this off without becoming another wrestling causality like so many wrestling promotions before us”. By the spring of 2008 we were ready to go with our first show, it was due or die.

Two years later and we’re closing in on show #50. What was supposed to be local bi-monthly shows in Selkirk, Manitoba turned into a travelling company, criss-crossing Manitoba and featuring international wrestling talent from all over. So much for the original business plan! Our first 11 shows in 2008 really set the foundation for the years to come. We established our presence in Selkirk and expanded to Winnipeg with spot shows in Stonewall and Souris. We released every event on DVD and began two internet TV series with SPW TV and SPW BlogTV.

I think what brings me the biggest smile is watching our roster grow. From the first show until now the talent have made great strides in the ring, always improving, connecting with the fans and becoming veritable stars on our circuit. The same goes for our first batch of trainees some of which are now integral parts of the roster. Watching them from our initial meeting to moments like winning their first title is like a father watching his son succeed. It’s very rewarding.

As president of Steeltown Pro Wrestling I’m looked at for direction, to lead the company from one show to the next. Thanks goodness for men like John Henry and Ron McLean in the SPW office and guys like Chi Chi Cruz and Jethro Hawg taking charge backstage. After all, one man can’t do it all. Sometimes, these guys are such great leaders you’d swear I was invisible.

I have a huge “to-do” list when it comes to SPW. While it amazes me how much I’ve been able to check off the list, the list is still quite long and I continue to add to it. Some might be wondering what’s next. A lot of the time, your guess is as good as mine because this business changes on a whim and can be difficult to predict from one day to the next. Never the less, somehow, we manage to “git ‘er done”.

One day I’d love to see SPW with some kind of broadcast deal that would beam us into every wrestling fans home. I’d love to have a DVD distribution deal to reach a larger market with a great ease of access to our footage. Heck, internet PPV seems to be easier and easier with each passing week. I have a list of talent that I’d love to see in a SPW ring from independent standouts to WWE legends.

That’s why I always say that for everything we’ve accomplished, it’s only just begun. The entire team has devoted so many hours to get make this what it is and plenty more hours will have to be put in to get it one step further. For all the stresses that come with those man hours, it’s been worth every single second!

In closing I want to thank the entire Steeltown Pro Wrestling roster and staff. You guys are the soul of the company and it’s carried on your backs. I also want to thank all of our wonderful sponsors who have been a joy to do business with. And most of all, most importantly, I want to thank our customers…the SPW fan base! You are why we do this and you are what make it worth it. See your faces in the crowd is all the reward I need. To everyone involved, THANK YOU!
