Like a rock, the SPW Heavyweight Championship scene is as stable as they come. Matt Fairlane reigned for more than a year, MARIUS’ reign hit 3 calendar years and Ike Idol was a month away from hitting the 365 day mark before dropping the gold to La Sombra.
For his part, La Sombra was consistent, defending the championship during one of SPW’s busiest periods against challengers far larger than him. So confident was he that he agreed to enter the Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament and defend the SPW Heavyweight Championship in each round in an effort to win the tournament for a second year in a row. In the opening round he defeated James Beaver to advance to the semi-finals against Rob Stardom.
James Beaver, upset over his loss to La Sombra, exacted his revenge with a post-match attack on La Sombra followed by another attack before La Sombra was set to face Stardom. Ultimately, the previous match and two from behind attacks proved to be too much, Stardom defeated La Sombra and became the new SPW Heavyweight Champion. As the winner, Stardom was not only champion but advanced to the finals of the Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament against Jethro Hawg.
Hawg and Stardom locked horns, going back and forth until James Beaver re-emerged. Beaver has made one thing clear; he’s after the championship at any cost. La Sombra re-emerged as well, ridding Beaver from ringside as the match between Starom and Hawg continued with both the tournament and the title hanging in the balance. Finally, the 20+ year veteran Jethro Hawg defeated Stardom to win the 3rd annual Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament. More importantly he became the new SPW Heavyweight Championship, marking the second time the title changed hands that night.
Hawg was ecstatic and celebrated with the fans.
In a single night two champions were crowned and several credible challengers have been established. Surely, La Sombra will want another crack at the gold and so will Rob Stardom. James Beaver has made his intentions clear; he’s chasing the top prize no matter whose champion. As a result, Hawg is looking at an immediate list of contenders, a list that is sure to grow with time.
Jethro Hawg worked hard to get to the top but he’ll have to work twice as hard to stay there.
