After compiling the SPW Year End Rankings, the SPW staff got to talking about who fans (and SPW officials) should be keeping an eye on in 2013. While it’s anyone’s guess who may break out as a star or main event player in the New Year several wrestlers have already begun building momentum towards success.
James Beaver
James Beaver ended the year on a strong note, despite a loss to Jethro Hawg. By late 2012 he inserted himself in the title picture at the Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament after numerous attacks on then champion La Sombra. He got involved in the tournament finals between Stardom and Hawg and was twice featured in the main event challenging SPW Heavyweight Champion Jehtro Hawg, at Halloweenpalooza and Christmas Catastrophe. Beaver has proven that he can be a main event player and time will tell if he has what it takes to win the big one. We think he does.
Rob Stardom
With a renewed vigour Stardom seems poised to have his most successful year in 2013. He’s dieting; hitting the gym hard, was in the finals of the Kerry Brown Memorial Tournament, briefly held the SPW Heavyweight Championship and won the Christmas Battle Bowl. While 2011 saw him in a rut with a long losing streak, 2012 was a mix of wins and losses and 2013 might be the year where he finds the right balance to become king of the mountain. He’s already in line for a championship match in the New Year and it may just be a matter of time before Stardom ascends to the top of the food chain.
Reggie Gallagher
Reggie Gallagher is an understated competitor often flying under the radar. We believe 2013 might be the year where he finds his groove as a single competitor. He’s a former SPW Tag Team Champion, has often been considered a top contender to the SPW Provincial Championship and closed out 2012 with a win over Honky Tonk Man and a great match with newly christened international star AJ Sanchez. We believe Gallagher has something up his sleeves even if his shirt doesn’t have any.
Buddy Wiser
Buddy Wiser is our dark horse pick after a phenomenal showing at Christmas Catastrophe, first with a hard hitting back and forth encounter with Rob Stardom and being the final man eliminated in the Christmas Battle Bowl. And how can we discount his connection to the fans? The fans were loud and proud cheering for Wiser throughout the evening. If Christmas Catastrophe was an indication of things to come, 2013 looks promising for Buddy Wiser.
